Turner MacLean leads Frogs in Nike Collegiate Invitational


Fort Worth native Turner MacLean enters the final round of the Nike Collegiate Invitational tied for ninth place after shooting a career-best three-under par- 68.

The career-best marks the second time for the junior shooting under 70. In the first round of the tournament Sunday, MacLean shot a 69.

MacLean has shot 28 pars over the two rounds, the most of all participants in the tournament.

Two of MacLean’s teammates also shot under 70. Juniors Stefano Mazzoli of Italy and Pierre Mazier of France both shot a three-under 68. The juniors each earned eagles Monday to contribute to the successful round. Mazier recorded his eagle on par 5 hole No. 4 and Mazzoli’s tallied his eagle on par 5 hole No. 18.

Mazzoli is tied for 21st in the tournament with a five-under 137, Mazier is tied for 54th overall with a four-over 146, junior Triston Fisher is tied for 48th with three-over 145 and junior Hayden Springer is tied for 60th at six-over 148.

Springer shot six birdies in the second round, five of which were in the front nine. Springer’s par 3 average of 2.7 is tied for the third-best in the field.

Overall, the Frogs shot six-under 562 and is tied with the Clemson Tigers for seventh place in the 15 team field. Four teams in the field were national semifinalists from last season, including the Stanford Cardinal that lead the tournament.

The final round of the tournament will begin at 10 a.m. and the Frogs will be matched up against Clemson and the Texas Longhorns.
