The first semester in college can be a difficult time of transition. This can be especially true for non-traditional students starting at a new school without a strong community or source of support. For students who transfer to TCU, however, there are many resources on campus to help in making TCU a home.
Those resources include the Transfer Leadership Team and the Transfer Center Connection Space, which is located in GrandMarc.
With 16 students on the TCU Transfer Leadership Team staff, the Transfer Center puts on monthly programs and works to engage transfer students and create a strong community.
As the fall semester comes to a close, transfer students around campus reflected on their experiences with TCU’s transfer programs, during their first semester as Horned Frogs.
Colton Clanton, a junior secondary physical science education major, said TCU’s transfer programs have made a huge difference in his time at TCU so far.
“I have taken part in most– if not all– transfer programs and events here,” Clanton said. “They have really helped me to branch out and meet a lot of new people, as well as get involved on campus. Without these events or programs, I would have missed out on several opportunities for self-improvement and interaction with others.”
Transfer student and sophomore strategic communication studies major Kylie Cobb said, “the transfer student programs and community were very helpful in the beginning of the semester.” As a result, she said she met some of her good friends through the Transfer Center’s activities and get-togethers.
“I may be a little biased,” senior psychology major Fernanda Reyes said. “But honestly, there is no other university with transfer programs as inclusive and engaging as the transfer programs at TCU. They make you feel like you belong, no matter what background you come from.”
Reyes, like many others, said she’s made the most out of the recently established Transfer Center Space in GrandMarc.
“It’s such a neat place to visit; it’s never cramped in there,” she said. “You get free printing services, computer access and a quiet space to study or just take a break.”
With new ideas and improvements being made each year, the Transfer Center continues to try to make incoming students feel at home at TCU by prioritizing transfer engagement on campus.
“There are instant connections and bonds to be made with other transfer students just based on your story,” Clanton said. “So, it’s been an incredible experience to take part in this growing community and come to know other students like me.”
