The end of the semester is here and as student stress skyrockets, TCU’s Student Government Association is planning to help students who are studying for finals.
Student Body President Ben Taylor said SGA is providing coffee, food and study spaces to ease some of the anxiety surrounding finals season.
SGA and Sodexo are offering students free small drip coffees and $1 off all other coffee beverages in Union Grounds, The Bistro Burnett and The Press from Sunday Dec. 9 through Friday Dec. 15, Taylor said.
“The coffee initiative was started several years ago and has always been a successful partnership between SGA and Sodexo, which is why it has lasted and occurred year after year,” Taylor said.
SGA also plans to serve free food Sunday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. between Reese Jones Hall and the library.
“We will be handing out free breakfast tacos from the Big Purple Truck as well to help students relieve stress,” Taylor said.
Many students said they become the most stressed out during this time of year, and free food will help them take a study break. However, some other students expressed a desire for more options to relieve their stress.
“Although food helps me take my mind off my books, we should definitely have more things like puppies or free stress balls,” sophomore engineering student Bailey Campbell said.
Sophomore business major Johnna Tucker said it is important for SGA and TCU to help students relieve stress during finals week.
“If I do not have ways to relieve my stress, I get overwhelmed and shut down,” Tucker said. “A lot of my grades are borderline so I really have to do well.”
Tucker said she prefers to study in a quiet area where she does not have distractions.
Fortunately for Tucker and other students like her, SGA has also partnered with the Brown-Lupton University Union and the King Family Commons staff to offer 24/7 study space during finals week. Tables and chairs will be set up throughout these buildings to maximize quiet study space for students.
Taylor said he hopes SGA’s stress relief initiative will help students through finals week.
“Students do better when they are free from excessive stress and can focus more effectively on their studies,” Taylor said. “In addition, it is important to encourage wellness throughout this stressful time, and we hope this initiative will help with that.”
