TCU women’s basketball overcame an 18-point second half deficit to secure a road victory over No. 15 West Virginia 76-74 in overtime Saturday.

The win marked TCU’s second consecutive victory against a ranked opponent and their first win in Morgantown.

“It’s hard to play West Virginia– no matter where you are playing them– because they are so well coached and they’ve got such incredible defense,” TCU head coach Raegan Pebley said. “It’s particularly hard to win a game here.”

The Horned Frogs trailed by 18 points midway through the third quarter, but managed to cut the lead down to 11 entering the fourth quarter. TCU senior guard  Toree Thompson made a three-pointer on the first possession of the fourth quarter, setting the tone for a the Horned Frogs to outscore the Mountaineers 21-10. 

After West Virginia regained the lead with 5.1 seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore guard Kianna Ray found junior forward Amy Okonkwo down low for the game tying bucket that sent the match into overtime. 

In overtime, the Mountaineers held onto a lead with less than thirty seconds remaining. Thompson missed a layup with nine seconds to go, but the Horned Frogs fought for a rebound and were rewarded with a held ball and the possession arrow. Again Ray found Okonkwo, this time for a game-winning three pointer.

“I’m just really proud of our team’s perseverance and grit,” Pebley said. “Not just in being down 18 but also being fatigued, tired and finding that extra juice. They dug in, and they didn’t give up.”

The win marked TCU’s first road win against a ranked opponent since 2014.

Junior center Jordan Moore led the team with 17 points, followed by Okonkwo, whose 16 points included the game-tying and game-winning baskets.

The Horned Frogs will look to carry the momentum from one of the best weeks in program history to next Saturday when they host the Kansas Jayhawks at Schollmaier Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
