College students seem to have a reliance on caffeine to get them through lectures and late night study sessions, but there are healthier alternatives to power through the day.

Sophomore sets school record in weight throw

TCU sophomore Ryan Camp broke the school weight throw record with consecutive throws of 60 feet at the New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“The weight throw guys are doing well and keep getting better,” track and field head coach Darryl Anderson said. “Each meet we go to, the competition is going to get better, so they will need to keep getting better.”

Camp edged teammate Isaiah Rogers to break the school weight throw record with a mark of 64 feet and 3.25 inches (19.59m). The previous record, 63 feet and 3.5 inches (19.29m), was set by Rogers on Dec. 9, 2017. Rogers recorded a mark of 62 feet 10.75 inches (19.17m) and senior Justin Sanchez matched his personal-best of 62 feet 4 inches (19.00m).

Running Events

In the 60-meter dash, senior Jalen Miller placed first with a season-best time of 6.65 seconds and senior Emeilo Ferguson placed second with a season-best time of 6.66. For the women, freshman Hope Glenn placed third with a time of 7.44.

In the 400-meter dash, senior Derrick Mokaleng and junior Kayla Heard secured first-place finishes. Mokaleng recorded a time of 46.25 seconds for the men and Heard a time of 54.98 for the women. Sophomore Jostyn Andrews placed fourth for the men at 48.29 and junior Lexi Aitken placed fifth at 58.06 for the women.

For the men’s 600-meter race, senior Kevin McClanahan finished first with a time of 1:17.92. On the women’s side, freshman Renee Payne placed third with a time of 1:37.06.

The men’s 4×400-meter relay squad of junior Darrion Flowers, Andrews, McClanahan and Mokaleng placed first with a time of 3:11.56.

In the 60-meter hurdles, junior Brittney Trought placed second, recording a time of 8.63 seconds.

Freshman Evelyn Mandel placed sixth in the women’s mile with a time of 5:02.84.

In the women’s 200-meter dash, freshman Hope Glenn placed third with a time of 24.51 seconds. For the men, Flowers placed fourth at 21.44 seconds and sophomore Emmanuel Ogwo placed seventh with a time of 21.80.

For the women’s 3000-meter race, senior Nicole Hicks placed third with a time of 10:21.57.

Field Events

In the field events, senior Scotty Newton secured a first-place finish in the men’s triple jump, recording a mark of 52 feet 2.5 inches (15.91m). For the women, freshman Leilyn Miles placed fourth in the shot put at 45 feet 7.25 inches (13.90m).

“I thought we got some things accomplished this weekend and we want to continue to get better,” Anderson said. “We’re going to take the next three weeks to prepare ourselves for conferences and take some people to the NCAA championships.”
