TCU Women’s basketball will be participating in the annual “Play4Kay” game Saturday when the Horned Frogs host Kansas State at Schollmaier Arena.
The game, which 122 Division one women’s teams participate in yearly, is part of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, named after the former North Carolina State head coach who died of breast cancer in 2009.
Yow finished with more than 700 career wins and is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
The fund’s lone goal, according to their website, is to help end women’s cancer. Since being founded in 2007, the fund has raised over $5 million.
TCU head coach Raegan Pebley is on the board of directors for the fund and makes a yearly contribution along with all of the fundraising efforts of the team.
“It’s really important to me, and I’m grateful that TCU gets behind it,” she said. “The goal is that we fulfill Coach Yow’s mission and that is to unify women’s basketball.”
The pink jerseys that the Horned Frogs will wear Saturday will be auctioned off online after the game with all of the proceeds going to the Yow Cancer Fund. The auction will be held on GoFrogs.com.
Fans can also donate through the Play4Kay Free Throw Challenge by pledging an amount for every free throw the team hits during the month of February. The Horned Frogs are currently projected to raise the third-highest amount in the nation at $2,825.
“We really try to do everything we can to come up with fundraising dollars that would go to research for finding cures for cancers that affect women,” Pebley said.
She also said free pink shirts will be available to all cancer survivors in attendance along with free purple shirts and pink popcorn for all fans. There will also be a pregame yoga session for “fighters and survivors” followed by a photo shoot.
Tip-off for the Play4Kay game is set for 2 p.m. The Horned Frogs will look to halt their four-game losing streak Saturday against the Kansas State Wildcats.
