Students looking to blend competition with community service have an upcoming opportunity in the 20th annual Delta Dunkfest Saturday, March 3.

Delta Delta Delta is hosting the event to raise money for Camp Sanguinity, a week-long summer camp for patients at Cook Children’s Hospital.

“I participated in Delta Dunkfest last spring and it was so much fun to play the game while also competing with some of my friends for a great cause,” Katie Adams said.

This year, the tournament will include 3-on-3 basketball games for students who sign up to compete.

“The camp is not only special because it lets the patients participate in fun activities, but they are the only camp at Camp John Marc, their host camp, that brings siblings to camp for the week,” Grace Cannan, Delta Delta Delta’s philanthropy chair, said.

Jill Koss, a Cook Children’s representative, said the donation from the Delta Dunkfest to Camp Sanguinity is the largest contribution they receive each year.

The money raised goes toward the campers’ expenses including the host camp, the buses that transport the campers and other expenses such as closed-toe shoes and bathing suits.

“I love how Camp Sanguinity gives this opportunity to patients and their siblings,” Cannan said. “It is valuable time for the family. The diagnosis affects the whole family and this camp provides a fun break.”

Students may participate in a team of four by registering and paying a fee of $50. Each player will also receive a jersey.

“When we tell our campers that they are being supported by local college students it makes them feel important,” Koss said.

The deadline to register is Feb. 28.
