While it may give off the vibe of a Disney Channel Original Movie from the trailer, “Love, Simon” is actually a good movie that we should have gotten years ago.

The story follows 17-year-old Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) in high school as he deals with his secret of being gay. He soon falls in love with an anonymous classmate that he has met online and has to deal with the struggles of coming out to his parents; Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Garner.

The overall acting in the film is a little better than what you might expect from a romantic comedy. Robinson did a better than expected job portraying a gay high-schooler dealing with bullying and things going terribly wrong in his life. The rest of the cast were on par for about every other romance movie and did what they needed to do on screen.

While there was a lot of cheesy and predictable moments in this movie, even when I knew what was coming, I still enjoyed the moment enough to keep me happy and engaged in the movie. There were also plenty of funny and sad moments throughout the film to keep things fresh.

Nothing in the film felt forced and it even felt very genuine for most parts. This movie is better than most of the romantic comedies that have come out in the last 10 years and is one that finally provides representation in the LGTBQ community.

Verdict:

“Love, Simon” is a nice romantic comedy that while at times it can be cheesy – sometimes cheesy can work. Given the decent performances by the cast and the at times funny and sad script, this movie is worth seeing and is much better than most romantic comedies that you are probably thinking of right now.
