Sophomores Haylen Green and Jake Eissler were named National Pitchers of the Week by Collegiate Baseball for their performances on the mound against Lamar over the weekend.
Eissler made his rotation debut Saturday against Lamar and faced the minimum 18 batters through six innings of work. He allowed one hit but picked the batter off at first base. Additionally, he notched a career-high 12 strikeouts. Eissler has recorded 23 strikeouts over his last 11 innings pitched.
“I felt really good,” Eissler said. “Ever since last weekend against Tech, I’ve been in a groove. I’ve really found my slider.”
Green put his name into the history books as he became just the fourth TCU pitcher to toss a nine-inning one-hitter. Green took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and allowed just three total baserunners in the game. Green issued just one walk and struck out a career-high 11 batters.
“Getting ahead early was a key part of my performance,” Green said. “I was commanding the ball on both sides of the plate. I was throwing whatever I wanted to whenever I wanted to, keeping them on their toes. It worked out for itself.”
During his record-breaking performance, Green kept himself composed.
“It popped in my head a couple of times but it was more of like a ‘Why are you thinking about that? Just stop’ because that’s how you jinx it,” Green said. “I was just going one inning at a time, one pitch at a time.”
Green was also named co-Big 12 Player of the Week.
Four Horned Frogs have previously won National Player of the Week honors. Green and Eissler join Jared Janczak, Preston Morrison, Brad Furnish and Lance Broadway.
