Campus Recreation will be hosting a trip to Matagorda Island, Texas from Oct. 13-16 for students and guests during fall break.
Cameron Potter, assistant director of outdoor programs, said it is a great opportunity for students looking for a relaxing and adventurous time.
“There will be many activities,” said Potter, “from sunbathing and chilling on the beach, to adventures such as paddling to the historic Matagorda Island Lighthouse from 1873.”
Besides the lighthouse, Matagorda Island has many other attractions, including their rocket launch site and the barrier reef outside of Corpus Christi.
“There are plenty of sights in and around Matagorda Island, but students will be free to go exploring and choose their own adventures,” said Potter.
A total of nine students will be able to sign up for the trip that will be led solely by student staff members. Potter said the trips offered by Campus Recreation are always completely booked and three trips are regularly scheduled.
“We did a trip to Hawaii for spring break last year, as well as snowshoeing in the mountains of Colorado,” Potter said. “We have been paddling in the Everglades, canoeing in the Rio Grande, rock climbing in Oklahoma, canyoneering in Zion National Park, Via Ferrara in Telluride, backpacking the Grand Canyon, as well as Yosemite.”
Alanna Carollo, an adventure trip instructor, said these trips are a lot of fun.
“The drive is always one of my favorite parts of trips with the outdoor center beause you get to know all the participants very well,” Carollo said. “We play games, jam out to music and have some interesting conversations.”
Carollo took part in co-leading a canoe camping trip to Big Bend National Park.
“Although these experiences are new to many people, we all have a great experience,” Carollo said.
Andrew Lawson, a junior communication major, is glad that TCU is always offering fun activities for its students.
“I haven’t made my own fall break plans yet and I’m not sure what to do, so it’s great that our own university presents us with these opportunities,” Lawson said. “I’ll consider this trip as I’ve never been to Matagorda Island and it sounds like a good time.”
Early registration will be open until Sept. 26 and will cost students $200 and $250 for guests. Regular registration will be open until Oct. 10 and will cost an extra $50.
Students and guests may sign up at the Campus Recreation front office or on the online portal at mycampusrec.tcu.edu.
