What we’re reading: Feeling like Superman…or not

What we’re reading- everything from “The Associated Press” to “Politico.” It’s election season and Washington is abuzz, but we’re here to break it down for you. Kanye’s taking a break from politics, the secretary of state and defense want a cease-fire in Yemen and more.

Peace, not war in Yemen

The Trump administration is calling for an end of the Saudi-Iran proxy war in Yemen and wants to bring both countries to the negotiating table in November.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged a cease-fire, calling for an end of missile and drone strikes into Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates from the Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen.

“The time is now for a cessation of hostilities,” Pompeo said in a written statement Tuesday at the United States Institute of Peace.

The Houthis are supported by Iran, who President Donald Trump called ‘the world’s leading sponsor of terror’ last month.

Rep. Pelosi is already calling the House for Democrats

House Minority Leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), is already declaring a Democrat victory in the battle for the House of Representatives.

Pelosi — who is looking to take back her gavel for Speaker of the House she lost eight years ago — said that her party is primed to take back the House, score a potential seat in the Senate and take back some gubernatorial races as well.

“Up until today, I would have said: ‘If the election were held today, we would win,’” Pelosi said on “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert Tuesday.

Pelosi said that her party can pick up the 23 seats needed to take back the House, and possibly far more.

Voter suppression in Georgia?

Claims of alleged voter suppression in the Georgia gubernatorial race have led to calls for the Republican candidate to step down from his job as Secretary of State.

Brian Kemp, Georgia’s Secretary of State since 2010, is facing Democrat Stacy Abrams in the election.

Since 2012, Kemp’s office has canceled over 1.4 million voter registrations. Canceling nearly 670,000 in 2017 alone.

Lawsuits have been filed over the state’s 2017 “Exact match” law, which requires Georgians’ government issued ID’s to exactly match the name on their voter registration cards.

Kanye hopping off the Trump train?

Rapper Kanye West sat in the Oval Office earlier this month and announced he and President Donald Trump were going to “make America great.”

West even said that wearing Trump’s trademark “Make America Great Again” hat made him “feel like Superman.”

West took to Twitter Tuesday signaling a change of heart about his support for Trump.

“My eyes are now wide open and now realize I’ve been used to spread a message I don’t believe in,” West wrote on Twitter. “I am distancing myself from politics and completely focusing on being creative.”
