Despite big performances from seniors Jordan Moore and Amy Okonkwo in the fourth quarter, TCU women’s basketball couldn’t quite complete their late comeback against No. 11 Texas 73-67.

Moore, the Horned Frogs’ leading scorer, went 8-12 with 20 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. This was her fifth 20-point game of the season. The blocks put her at 200 for her career, making her just the third player in TCU history to reach that mark.

Okonkwo poured in 18 points of her own to go with six rebounds and two steals. The Rancho Cucamonga, California, native has now scored 15 or more points in three-straight contests.

With strong bench play, the Horned Frogs finished the first quarter strong with an 18-15 lead. They couldn’t carry this momentum into the second period though, as the Longhorns used a 13-2 run to take a 33-26 lead at the halftime break.

After Texas continued to control the game through the third quarter, leading by as much as 15, TCU clawed back into the game. A three from Okonkwo cut the Horned Frogs’ deficit to just one with 3:27 left in the game.

The senior duo for TCU kept the Horned Frogs within striking distance until within a minute left to play. Strong defense and stellar free throw shooting from Texas were too much for TCU to overcome though, and they suffered their fourth loss in the last five games.

Guard Jayde Woods had a season-high 12 points for the Horned Frogs.

Despite the loss, TCU outrebounded and outscored Texas in the paint, becoming just the second and third teams to do so this season, respectively.

“I definitely see growth in our team,” head coach Raegan Pebley said. “We might be disappointed, but we are not discouraged.”

The Horned Frogs will return to action at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, for a matchup at home with Oklahoma.
