Former TCU basketball point guard Alex Robinson signed a partial contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday.
Robinson was invited to join the Sacramento Kings Summer League team after going undrafted in June. With the Kings, Robinson made an impression with the minimal playing time he had. In his pro debut, he had two points and five assists in just eight minutes of play.
Though the Kings chose not to sign Robinson after summer league, he caught the eye of the Cavs, who signed him to a training camp deal.
The former TCU standout will be competing with three first-round picks in rising star Collin Sexton, nine-year NBA veteran Brandon Knight, and rookie Darius Garland for
Robinson spent his first year at Texas A&M before transferring to TCU for the 2016-17 season. In his three seasons in the purple and white, the Fort Worth native led the Horned Frogs to two NIT final four appearances (including an NIT title in 2017) and their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1998.
Known for his ability to see the floor well, Robinson set the TCU single-season assist record with 254 in his senior campaign. He finished with 672 assists in his time at TCU, which ranks first in program history. He also scored 1,202 points while playing for the Horned Frogs.
Robinson joins New Orleans Pelicans forward Kenrich Williams as the only two former TCU players who are currently on NBA rosters. He joins a Cavaliers team that was lived near the bottom of the standings last year with a record of 19-63.
With NBA training camp starting on Sept. 28, we will soon find out where Robinson will be spending his season as he strives to turn his dream of playing for an NBA team into a reality.
