Kobe Bryant and daughter among dead in helicopter crash
Former Los Angeles Lakers star and NBA icon Kobe Bryant, 41, and his daughter Gianna, 13, died in a helicopter crash Sunday in Calabasas, California, according to the New York Times.
The retired NBA star was among the nine passengers aboard the helicopter. There were no survivors, said Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.
Bryant was on his way to the Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, California, to coach his daughter when the helicopter crashed, according to law enforcement officials.
The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team to California late Sunday; it was not apparent how many passengers were authorized to be transported or whether the helicopter was overloaded, fire officials said.
Fans laid flowers and lit candles outside Staples Center, the Lakers home court, in remembrance of the star.
Coronavirus cases increase in U.S. as death toll rises in China
Wuhan, the center focus of a worldwide disease outbreak, may have 1,000 more confirmed cases of the coronavirus, said Zhou Xianwang, the mayor of Wuhan, on Sunday.
The assumption was based on the idea that about half of the city’s suspected 3,000 cases would test positive for the virus, Xianwang said in a news conference.
The amount of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in China was 1,975 as of Sunday morning, while a fifth case was confirmed in the United States. The number of deaths in China was 56, according to the New York Times.
2 dead, 4 wounded following shooting at SC bar
Six people were shot at a bar in Hartsville, South Carolina early Sunday morning, the Darlington County Coroner said.
Two people are dead and four are wounded. The shooting took place around midnight at Mac’s Lounge near Coker College, according to CNN.
No arrests have been made and motives still remain unclear, said Hartsville city spokeswoman Lauren Baker.
President Trump’s legal team accuses Democrats of election interference
Donald Trump’s legal team refuted the impeachment arguments made by House impeachment managers over the weekend, saying there are no accounts to justify removing the president from office, according to Fox News.
The managers argued last week that Trump needs to be impeached because he abused his oath of office in order to boost his 2020 presidential campaign, according to Fox News.
White House counsel Pat Cipollone said Democrats are crippling voters and doing an injustice to democracy.
Democrats are planning on forcing a vote for new witnesses and acquiring White House documents next week. Four GOP senators will need to join the Democratic minority for the vote to pass.
