COVID-19 cases prompt TCU to postpone home opener against football rival SMU

TCU football’s season opener against Southern Methodist University has been postponed due to COVID-19 cases among TCU’s team and staff.

The news came in a Tweet from Jeremiah Donati, the director of intercollegiate athletics.

“We discovered that some student-athletes and support staff in our football program have tested positive for COVID-19,” Donati wrote.

Both TCU and SMU have seen an increase in cases since classes began, with TCU’s cases declining in the past couple of days. TCU has 244 active COVID-19 cases, and SMU has 176 active cases.

Details on whether the SMU football program has been affected by COVID-19 have not been released.

The two universities will monitor dates throughout the season to possibly make up the game, Donati tweeted.

“We firmly believe we will be ready to resume football activities soon,” Donati said in his statement.

The Big 12 announced its football game cancellation thresholds Sept. 4. The minimum number of players required to proceed with a game has been set at 53 based on the entire roster, including walk-on and scholarship players, according to a statement from the Big 12 Conference.

“Teams falling below any of these benchmarks could still elect to play as scheduled,” according to the statement. “Otherwise, the game would be declared a no-contest if it cannot be moved to a later date.”

The open dates in the football season will be used to reschedule postponed games.

Conference games begin Sept. 26.

TCU’s Big 12 conference opener against Iowa State is still scheduled for Sept. 26 at the Amon G. Carter Stadium.
