A new coffee shop is also offering a unique church going experience.

Common Grounds coffee shop is located on Greene Avenue and hosts the Christ Chapel College’s Sunday services.

Sammie Miocic, a senior nursing major and member of the church, said the non-traditional church venues like Common Grounds are meant to provide a comfortable and casual setting for new churchgoers and for people who have experienced church hurt.

Miocic said especially in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, community is important.

“In general, in life, we are created for community, and I think that during this COVID pandemic, it has really showed that we aren’t wired to be in isolation and to be secluded from other people, especially people in your same age and walk of life, aka college kids,” Miocic said.

Common Grounds began in Waco and expanded to Fort Worth when Christ Chapel offered them space in the building they own behind Toppers Pizza.

Ben Fuqua, the college and young adult pastor, said he wants to create a safe and welcoming environment for college students.

“The world we live in now has changed to where in order for it to be welcoming, it is safe, and I think that is the new normal of what genuine and welcoming should look like in the church, in the Body of Christ, and in anywhere, that people are prioritizing safety,” Fuqua said.

On Sundays, churchgoers are required to get their temperature checked at the door, wear masks at all times and sit socially distanced. Christ Chapel also live streams their services for people who want to watch from home.

They have started to offer two services, one at 9 a.m. and one at 11 a.m., in order to allow as many people as possible to come and worship.
