Supreme Court confirmation hearings begin
With 22 days until the presidential election, the Senate started the confirmation hearing for Judge Amy Coney Barrett this morning, according to the New York Times.
Democrats and Republicans are expected to be completely split in the decision with the prediction of Republicans voting yes and Democrats voting no.
If the Republicans are able to confirm Barrett before Election Day, conservatives would have a 6-3 majority on the court.
The controversial topic of Roe v. Wade, the decision that made abortion a constitutional right, is expected to be an important topic during the hearing.
The hearings will continue for the next four days.
Hurricane Delta leaves serious damage in Louisiana
Louisiana has been hit hard with hurricanes this season, and this past weekend Hurricane Delta left damage, “but not necessarily despair,” according to Fox News.
Residents in Lake Charles, Louisiana, were thankful the damage was not as bad as they thought it was going to be.
About 350,000 homeowners in Louisiana were without power after 100 mph winds.
Hurricane Delta, along with the other recent hurricanes to hit Louisiana, has brought the community together to work on rebuilding.
This hurricane was the 10th this season to hit U.S. land.
Study reveals new information about COVID-19
A new study by Australia’s national science agency shows COVID-19 can live on glass and stainless steel for up to 28 days, according to NBC News.
This new study proves how important it is to clean and sanitize surfaces and hands.
Compared to the influenza virus, COVID-19 can survive about 11 days longer on specific surfaces.
The study also showed that the virus lives longer in cooler temperatures than in warmer which is a positive finding for countries in the southern hemisphere heading into summer.
Wisconsin residents protest after police shooting
For the fifth night in a row, protests have erupted around Wisconsin following a police officer who shot and killed a Black teenager, according to ABC News.
The prosecutor’s decision not to charge the police officer involved in the shooting caused demonstrators to protest in a Milwaukee suburb.
The gathering last night was more peaceful than last week’s protests.
City Hall reopened today after the past few days of unrest in Milwaukee.
