Over 30 years later the Writing Center has helped over 35,000 undergraduate students, graduate students, doctoral students and professors.  

The William L. Adams Center for Writing began with five original staff members in 1981. The center reached its peak of student participation in 2018 with 11,000 students utilizing its services. 

The provost at the time of its founding, Provost Taylor, saw a crisis on campus and brought in different professionals from all across the country to help improve the writers on TCU’s campus.

“I have been an advocate for the writing center since my first year at TCU. Now in my first semester of grad school, I still find myself using their services to improve my work and better understand assignments,” said graduate student and TCU college adviser Jewell Cooksey. “The Writing Center has elevated my writing skills and added to my confidence as a writer.”

Staff members and peer consultants work with students to help better understand assignments, prepare thesis statements, organize purpose statements, properly cite sources and collect text evidence to support their main topic or claim.

Contrary to popular belief, the Writing Center does not only serve the English department. It is open to all students. Business majors rank No. 1 for students who use the Writing Center, while English students sit at No. 2.

Students may also submit papers online through the Writing Center’s online service provided on its website.

After an assignment is submitted for review, students can expect to receive feedback within 24-48 hours, depending on the length of the assignment.

The Writing Center currently services students online through an online writing lab and via zoom. The center has plans to reopen to in-person consultation in the fall.
