Midterm elections 2022

Congressional races

This story was updated at 1 p.m. on Nov. 10
Democrats’ control of both chambers of Congress was in question Tuesday evening as Republicans gained ground in both the House and Senate.
The shape of Congress may not be called for a few weeks, as winners in the most competitive Senate and House races are not finalized.
Before the 2022 election, each party had 50 members in the 100 person legislative body with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote in Senate ties. Some of the most competitive Senate races are in Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona and Georgia.
Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Mehmet Oz were locked in a close contest in Pennsylvania. Oz questioned Lt. Gov. Fetterman’s ability to serve because he was recovering from the effects of a stroke. However, Fetterman won with 51% of the vote.
Control over the Senate now hinges on the Senate results of Georgia, Arizona and Nevada.
The Senate race in Georgia will now head to a runoff on Dec. 6, as neither candidate met the 50% threshold of votes. With more than 95% of precincts reporting votes, Republican Hershcel Walker received 48.5% of the vote. Sen. Raphael Warnock, the Democratic incumbent received 49.4% of the vote.
Arizona’s Senate race remains uncalled with Democratic incumbent Mark Kelly leading Trump-endorsed Republican Blake Masters with 70% of their precincts reporting.
Nevada’s Senate race remains a toss-up. With 83% of the votes collected, Republican Adam Laxalt received 49% of the vote. Democrat Catherine Cortez Mastro trails behind with 48% of the vote.
House of Representatives
Republicans lead the House, but election results are not finalized. According to the Associated Press, the Democrats have lost seven seats, and the Republicans have gained six seats.
“We are going to take the House back," Senate Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy insisted.
For control of the House, either party must elect 218 members. Republicans have 209 representatives and would need nine more. Democrats have 185 members and would need to gain 33 more representatives for House control.
Trailblazers in the 2022 Midterm election
Wes Moore will become Maryland’s first Black governor. A democrat, Moore defeated Republican Dan Cox.
In the fall of 2015, Moore spoke at TCU about his book, “The Other Wes Moore,” which served as the common-read for all incoming first-years. TCU’s Student Government Association declared Oct. 28 Wes Moore Day at the university.
Maura Healey continues the list of trailblazers in the 2022 Primary as the nation’s first woman and first openly lesbian governor to be elected to governor in Massachusetts. She defeated Republican Geoff Diehl in the Massachusetts race.
Gubernatorial races
In the rematch of the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race, Stacey Abrams conceded to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis won a second term. DeSantis is expected to make a run for president in 2024.
Republican Sarah Huckabee Sanders becomes the first woman elected governor in Arkansas. Her father Mike Huckabee served as Arkansas governor from 1993 to 1996.

Texans gave Gov. Greg Abbott a third term Tuesday, as Beto O’Rourke’s stand on gun safety and abortion failed to rally Democrats.
With 99% of the vote counted, the Associated Press predicted Abbott’s victory. Republicans will make a clean sweep of the state’s highest offices, with Attorney General Ken Paxton and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick also winning their reelection campaigns by size-able margins.
Abbott came out victorious against O’Rourke, who has now lost his second straight statewide election in Texas after his 2018 loss to Ted Cruz in the highly competitive senate race.
In his acceptance speech, Abbott stated, "I want to thank all of the volunteers, all of our supporters, and my fellow Texans for making this victory night possible."
After the Uvalde shooting in May and the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in June, O’Rourke centered his campaign around gun safety and abortion. Texas Democrats were hopeful that this would give them the spark they needed to finally turn Texas blue, but after tonight’s results it is clear that it did not sway voters as much as they had hoped.
Controversy has surrounded the Texas Attorney General race, as incumbent Ken Paxton fled his home in September to avoid being served a subpoena for a federal court hearing in an abortion rights lawsuit. His challenger, Rochelle Garza, is a civil rights attorney and big proponent of women’s reproductive rights.
Locally, Republican Kay Granger was elected to her 14th consecutive term to represent Texas’ 12th congressional district, which includes Fort Worth. Granger defeated 27-year-old Trey Hunt, her Democrat challenger, by over 10 points.
Tarrant County is also holding an election for judge, where Republican Tim O’Hare defeated Democrat Deborah Peoples by over five points to become the new Tarrant County judge.
According to The Texas Tribune, early voting turnout across Texas was down compared to the last midterm election in 2018.
Dólares Valdez, a Fort Worth local and election poll worker stated, “I do Election Day voting, I don’t know why, I just like it better.” Despite the option of early voting, many, similar to Valdez, like waiting until Election Day to vote.
Counties have 24 hours to fully report their vote tallies to the Texas Secretary of State’s office.
