Resident assistant applications reach record level – here’s why

Leadership experience and community building are two key reasons that an increasing number of students are applying to be a Resident Assistant, according to housing officials.
The 151 students selected receive a stipend along with free housing and a meal plan.
“This year, we saw a record number of applications — 399,” said Norma Ramirez, the housing and residence life assistant director who’s leading the selection process.
The application process closed in January.
“There is not enough data to see if it’s correlated with housing,” Ramirez said. “A lot of people need the additional [financial] assistance but also love the leadership opportunity.”
Abby DeCesare, an RA applicant, was inspired to apply for many different reasons.
“My main motivation is to give back to the community and be more involved with TCU,” DeCesare said. “Observing the environment surrounding those in leadership roles, I saw the community as something I wanted to be part of.”
DeCesare said the financial benefits of the job incentivized her.
“Having a free meal plan and free housing saves money that can be put toward my education, as I am planning on attending graduate school,” she said.
According to housing officials, there are 151 available resident assistant positions on campus.
Markel Harris, hall director and chair of returning staff selection, said the hiring committee saw similar patterns in this year’s applicant pool.
“There were some junior and senior applicants,” Harris said. “But I don’t think there was a big increase. There were a lot of first-year applicants.”
Many applicants have shown interest in the community building aspect of the RA position.
“We look for everything,” Harris said. “We want people who can connect with everyone. Extraverted, introverted, different majors, Greek [life] and not Greek and a well balanced staff.”
RA applications are a strenuous, multi-round interview process. This year’s accepted RAs received decisions Feb. 24.
