Gracie Brian helps TCU soccer snatch a win

The Horned Frogs dominated the season opener against their cross-town rival SMU Mustangs

TCU notched their first win of the season after taking down rival SMU 1-0 in the season opener.

In the first half the Frogs played great defense, preventing the Mustangs from scoring and also showed no fear when it came to taking shots in defensive traffic. TCU was able to out-shoot the Mustangs 7-3.

Fifth-year returner Gracie Brian pressured SMU on both sides of the ball. She defended efficiently and with just under 22 minutes on the clock, Brian scored the lone goal of the match, assisted by AJ Hennessey.

SMU turned up the heat in the second half, adding 6 more shot attempts, but it wasn’t enough.

The Mustangs had more touches on the ball in the second half, but TCU goalkeeper Lauren Kellett put down any scoring attempts they made.

Brian said the chemistry between her and the front line was a key component in disrupting SMU’s build-up play.

“It is a very fast-paced game and there are people on you all the time,” said Brian. “Just knowing where your teammates are and where they like the ball helps a lot.”

With the first win of the season under their belt, the Horned Frogs will remain at home to take on Florida St. Kickoff is Sunday at 7 P.M.
