Early this morning, a TCU student was shot and killed in the West Seventh area, according to an email from TCU to its faculty, staff and students.
Wes Smith was a junior finance major in the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He also played football for the Horned Frogs in 2021. Fort Worth Police said Smith was shot while standing in the road near the 3000 block of Bledsoe Street.

Smith went to high school at St. George’s Independent School in Tennessee.
A suspect, identified as 21-year-old Matthew Purdy, is in custody, according to Tarrant County jail records. He is facing a murder charge and is being held on a $500,000 bond. He also assaulted a woman while fleeing the scene, detectives told NBC.
There is still no motive for the shooting.
