House votes to oust McCarthy
The motion to remove California Republican Kevin McCarthy came after he worked with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown last weekend, according to The Guardian.
The shutdown would have left millions of federal workers without pay but was averted by the passage of a financial bill on Saturday evening.
The House voted 216 to 210 on Tuesday afternoon to remove McCarthy from his position as House speaker, according to CBS News.
McCarthy served in the position for 269 days and is the first speaker in U.S. history to be removed in this manner.
9-year-old girl found safe in New York
Charlotte Sena, the 9-year-old girl last seen in Moreau Lake State Park, was found unharmed in the cupboard of a trailer on Monday morning, the New York State Police said.
According to NBC News, police used fingerprints from a ransom note left at the home of the girl’s parents to track down the primary suspect, who is now in custody.
“We are thrilled that she is home and we understand that the outcome is not what every family gets,” Jené Sena, Charlotte’s aunt, said.
Suspect Craig Nelson Jr. is facing a first-degree kidnapping charge in Milton County Court and is set to appear in court on Oct. 17.
Michigan school shooter’s parents facing involuntary manslaughter charges
The Michigan Supreme Court cleared Jennifer and James Crumbley to stand trial after the Oxford, Michigan school shooting in 2021, according to AP news.
Jennifer and James Crumbley are the parents of the shooter Ethan Crumbley. The couple are accused of ignoring their child’s mental health crises, neglecting their child and making the weapon of the shooting available to him.
Defense attorneys for the Crumbleys argue that the shooting was an unpredictable event and no one outside of the shooter should be charged.
Ethan Crumbley will be sentenced on Dec. 8 and faces a possible sentence of life without parole.
