“Once Upon a Mattress,” a 1959 musical comedy adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairytale “The Princess and the Pea,” will open at the Stage West Theatre this Thursday, Oct. 19.
“Once Upon a Mattress” is Theatre TCU’s co-production this year and the cast will consist of Theatre TCU students as well as professionals in the industry.
Savannah DeCrow, a senior musical theatre major, stars as Princess Winnifred.
“She’s a non-traditional leading lady,” DeCrow said. “But, I think that her being so unconventional is what makes Winnifred so endearing… she’s kind of just a free spirit that says what she wants and does what makes her happy.”
DeCrow said that “Once Upon a Mattress” turns every aspect of conventionality on its head, giving the age-old story fresh and unexpected twists that are sure to leave the audience wanting more.
“I think that the audience will enjoy the way that we are bringing new life to an ‘old’ story that is known and loved by so many,” Mia Dorsett, a junior musical theatre major who plays Lady Larkin, said. “The concept is very clever and fun. I think a lot of people will resonate with this show!”
Directed by Stage West Associate Producer Garret Storms, “Once Upon a Mattress” has provided Theatre TCU students with the opportunity to perform alongside professionals in the industry.
“It has been the most educational and enlightening experience to be able to learn from these professionals,” DeCrow said. “They push us to be the best we can be, but they also cheer us on every step of the way.”
“Stage West has allowed us the opportunity to really get to see what a life in theatre would look like after college,” Grace Moore, a senior acting major and “Once Upon a Mattress” ensemble member, said. “It’s been amazing to work with these incredible professionals.”
Once Upon a Mattress opens Thursday, Oct. 19 for a 3-week run at Stage West Theatre. Tickets are available for purchase here.
