President Biden facing challenge in 2024 presidential election
Breaking with traditional U.S. political customs, Democratic Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips is challenging President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election, according to AP News.
Although Phillips supports the work Biden has completed during his term, he believes in the need for new, younger leadership in politics.
Andre Dickens, who is the mayor of Atlanta and a member of Biden’s advisory board for re-election, said that Phillips’ acts are an “attention-seeking stunt that is deeply insulting to Black voters and the coalition that saved our country from Donald Trump.”
An AP-NORC poll released in August found that 77% of adults in the United States believe that Biden is too old to have a successful second term.
Despite wavering support for Biden, it is believed that he will still clinch the Democratic nomination.
Acapulco, Mexico recovering after the region’s strongest recorded storm
Hurricane Otis struck Acapulco, Mexico on Wednesday, leaving 27 dead and four missing, according to CNN.
With projected forecasts understating the severity of the category five hurricane, many residents of the region were left unprepared and as many as 500,000 homes and businesses lost power.
Otis is the strongest storm in recorded history for Acapulco. Scientists believe storms like Otis can be attributed to human-caused climate change.
Officials state that 10,000 military personnel have been ordered to help the region recover with an additional 1,000 individuals tasked with bringing back the water grid for residents.
U.S. orders strikes on military targets in Syria and Iraq
The U.S. ordered an aerial strike on key munitions locations in Syria following attacks from the Revolutionary Guards in Iran, which occupy the attacked targets, according to BBC News.
U.S. officials have stated that these strikes are not related to the unrest in Gaza, and instead are an act of self-defense.
Since the Israel-Palestine conflict has begun, the U.S. has been subjected to 12 attacks in Iraq and four attacks in Syria.
Growing conflicts in the Middle East make these acts more substantial, with fears that the war will be escalated by neighboring nations like Iran joining in on the fight.
