Just one day after firing Joe Gillespie, the Frogs have filled the defensive coordinator vacancy with Andy Avalos, who will join TCU from Boise State, where he was head coach.
He went 22-14 in his tenure at Boise, winning Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2022 after a 10-win season that brought the Broncos to the conference championship game.
Avalos also has a detailed history of being a defensive coordinator before his time at Boise State. His defenses at Oregon helped the team win two Pac-12 championships. Additionally, he was a semi-finalist for the Broyles Award in 2019, which is awarded to the nation’s top assistant coach.
Avalos brings with him a new defensive scheme to TCU. Gillespie ran a lot of 3-3-5 coverages, but Avalos likes to rush four and run single-high coverages. This should open the door for more sacks and additional pressure with the new scheme instead of dropping back five guys into coverage.
It is to be seen how this will affect the transfer portal and recruiting for TCU, but Avalos proved his value as an elite coordinator at Oregon when he had access to power-5 resources and recruiting.
From all accounts, this looks to be a great hire for Coach Dykes and company, and now with the biggest question mark of the offseason answered, the players and coaches can now get to work and hopefully bounce back from that 5-7 performance.
