The TCU Horned Frogs (14-5, 3-3 Big 12) marched into Gallagher-Iba Arena and secured a much-needed 74-69 victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys (9-10, 0-6 Big 12).
Following consecutive conference losses to Cincinnati and Iowa State, it was imperative the Frogs get a positive result in Stillwater to remain as contenders in the Big 12.
Starting 3-12 from the field, the Frogs got out to a slow start, falling behind the Cowboys in the opening minutes. Some missed opportunities and poor execution put the Frogs behind by 14 with 10:37 remaining in the first half. Oklahoma State extended the lead to 17 with 5:58 left.
With just a few minutes left in the half, the Frogs switched into second gear. TCU sharpened its defense and found an offensive surge, cutting the deficit to just four after a 17-4 run to end the half.
Despite running into a stout Cowboys defense in the first half, the Frogs powered through, totaling 24 points in the paint and scored seven second-chance points.
In just under three minutes into the second half, the Frogs had taken a 42-39 lead over the Cowboys. But there was not much to separate the two sides in the 2nd half. Both teams went on commanding runs, and each answered right back. Tied at 61 apiece, Avery Anderson III nailed a three-pointer with 7:09 remaining. Seconds later, Anderson blocked Jarius Hicklen before Micah Peavy finds Xavier Cork in the paint for two.
Just like that the Frogs jumped ahead with a five-point lead. While the Cowboys threatened in the final minutes the Frogs remained too far in front. Free throws from Emanuel Miller and Chuck O’Bannon in the final moments sealed the win for the Horned Frogs.
It was not the cleanest or prettiest game, but the Frogs got the job done. It was just the fourth time TCU was victorious on the road against Oklahoma State since squaring off in 1918.
