Young Americans are less religious than their parents and grandparents, according to research from Gallup. An evangelic group visited campus last week to try and correct this trend.
Carry the Love held a worship service on Feb. 20 in the auditorium of the Brown-Lupton University Union. The group exists “to reach a lost generation with the message of Jesus and activate believers to a lifestyle of love and evangelism,” according to its website.
About 100 students attended the worship service.
Vittrio Piazza, a junior philosophy major, learned about the event through Calling in Action, the Christian dance club that planned it.
“My friend helped organize the event, and she told me about it when I saw her at church,” Piazza said. “She also posted the info in our church’s GroupMe and placed a bunch of yard signs which I saw.”
Students worshiped through prayers, songs and readings from the Old Testament telling of God’s compassion.
Piazza said he works to keep his faith strong. “I think the most impactful way to grow closer to God is to spend dedicated time in prayer and reading His word, alone or with others.”
The Carry the Love team shared their experiences and encouraged the students to put their faith in God.
The crowd cheered when asked if anyone would like to accept God into their life.
“I did enjoy it because I was able to partake in worship, and I heard a good message,” Cal Phillips, a first-year journalism major, said.
The Carry the Love team capped off the night by asking students to remove and raise their shoes which they did while proclaiming that they would walk with Jesus.
