Strike Down Cancer, a TCU organization, is hosting its annual 5k Color Run at 8 a.m. Saturday in partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Returning after a hiatus necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual color run is SDC’s largest fundraiser. This year organizers hope to raise $3,000, which would allow the organization to reach its yearly donation goal of $5,000 to give to St. Jude.
Established in 1998 through a collaborative partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, SDC’s mission is to raise funds for pediatric cancer research.
Vice President Anne Shubert, currently serving as interim president of SDC, said 140 runners registered for this year’s event, with all proceeds directed towards St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“I love knowing how much of an effect SDC can make for the children and families at St. Jude,” Shubert said. “Every week I get updates from St. Jude with a story of a patient and what some of the money we’ve donated could go towards.”
Shubert emphasized the importance of the contributions of volunteers, students, faculty and staff to the event.
The Fort Worth community, including local businesses like Nekter, a juice bar, has provided sponsorship, with Nekter setting up a table along the running trail to offer support.
To ensure the event’s safety and efficiency, the TCU Police Department, in collaboration with the fire department and EMTs, will manage traffic along University Drive during the run.
Upon completion, runners will receive commemorative ribbons, while registered participants stand a chance to win a gift card to a local running company.
SDC invites individuals to participate in this meaningful effort to support pediatric cancer research and provide hope to affected families.
Registration to run, including a $10 entrance fee, is open until the run starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Check in to the event starts at 7 a.m. Volunteers are still able to sign up, as well.
