Over Labor Day weekend, the TCU women’s triathlon team secured first place in their opening season race at The Southern Hills Triathlon.
Over six collegiate teams, including Arizona, Black Hills State and Colorado Mesa, traveled to Hot Springs to compete in the race.
The race consisted of a 375-meter swim, a 10-kilometer bike ride and a 5K run.
According to Denver University Athletics, the Southern Hills Triathlon is half the distance of what the NCAA squads typically race at.
“This race was a super sprint, so half of our regular distance,” said junior TCU triathlete Anabella Veltcheva.
In the individual races, five girls placed in the top 20.
Junior, Annabella Veltcheva, placed seventh, leading the Horned Frogs to a victory. Kira Gupta-Baltazar, a graduate student, and the 2021 DI Individual National Champion placed ninth. Freshman Marley Andelman took eleventh while juniors Jenna Buchanan and Maria Coral took twelfth and thirteenth.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing our team continue to grow and improve,” Veltcheva said. “We have a lot of new girls on the team, and I know our dynamic is only going to get stronger.”
