TCU’s fall career fair is next week on Sept. 18th, and Student Support Services (SSS) is making sure students are able to dress for the part. Students have until 6 p.m. tonight, Sept. 12, to pick up a full outfit for next week and beyond.
“When you look good, you feel good, which allows you to perform good,” Jowelle Mitchell, the assistant director of SSS STEM and Health Sciences, said.
The Business Attire Pop-Up Shop, now in its third year, aims to support students who may lack business attire for any reason. Students can choose either a single item or an entire outfit.
“Anybody and everybody in every major can benefit from this,” said Dr. Cynthia Montes, the director of SSS and SSS STEM and Health Science.
“The first year, we worried if students would actually come to the event. We were worried how the message of the booth would be received by students because we didn’t want it to seem like charity and have that be a deterrent,” Montes said.
Despite Montes’ worries, the pop-up booth has been extremely successful.
“Year one, our goal was 50 students, but over 400 students came to the booth! Then, last year, it picked up even more momentum and had even more volunteers and over 550 students,” Montes said.
A unique aspect of the event is that the volunteers are not students.
“One of the things we really pride ourselves on with this event is that all the volunteers at the event are faculty and staff,” Mitchell said. “We don’t have students volunteering at the event because this is the time for them to be served.”
The booth offers eight dressing rooms to try on business attire, a raffle for all participants and a five-minute speed networking session with Career Services, where they will review your resume and provide business tips.
The Business Attire Pop-Up Shop closes at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12.
