TCU students looking for dating advice have another place to turn.
“Heartbeats and Hesitations” offers two perspectives: one from a woman in a relationship and one who is not.
An unexpected friendship between Mallory Marder and Lauren Haile led to the show.
Marder, a senior sports broadcasting major, and Haile, a sophomore strategic communication major, met through KTCU.
“We meshed really well when we did our regular radio shifts last semester, and so we wanted to find a way where we can talk about stuff that we liked and enjoyed,” Marder said.
Their compatibility is what formed the idea of the radio show, “Heartbeats and Hesitations.”
“We usually talk about so many things, like dating and relationships,” Haile said. “We kind of like to give our own opinion and ask the audience for theirs.”
When planning the show and deciding on topics for each episode, Marder and Haile find that the conversation flows more naturally without a detailed script.
“There’s not a lot of planning beforehand,” Haile said. “We’re just really good at riffing off each other, and it sounds scripted if we think too much about it.”
Marder mentioned it can be a little difficult to get up in the morning to record.
“When I get out of class at 9:40 on Monday [and] have to be there at 8 a.m. the next morning, it’s a little bit hard,” Marder said. “But then I’m like, ‘oh my gosh, my day is going to go by so fast,’ because it’s just so much fun in the morning.”
When it comes to recording the show, both Haile and Marder agree that they contribute the same amount of work as hosts for “Heartbeats and Hesitations.”
“We try to switch it up,” Marder said. “Like I’ll say a story, and she’ll give her opinion. Or she’ll bring something up, and we’ll dive deep into it. We really like to bounce off each other.”
Haile mentioned her favorite part about recording the show is having Marder as a co-host.
“It’s just so fun to start our morning with a laugh,” Haile said. “Originally, I pitched it to Jeff Geoff on my own in an email, and he brought [Marder] on as somebody who’s in a relationship, and I was like, ‘you know what, you are so right.’”
“Heartbeats and Hesitations” goes live every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. CST on KTCU FM 88.7. Haile, who is in charge of social media, records the episodes and posts them on Instagram.
“When you listen to anything, sometimes they don’t like it because it’s just one person’s opinion, or they all agree, so I just think having the two different opinions, and like, two different viewpoints is really interesting,” Marder said. “Plus, it’s two girls being funny, so anybody can get a kick out of it.”
