The 2024 VP debate is happening tonight. Here’s what to know.
Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are having their only scheduled debate on Oct. 1. The debate starts at 8 p.m. CT on Tuesday and will run about 90 minutes. Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan will moderate the debate, which will take place at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City. O’Donnell is the “CBS Evening News” anchor and Brennan is the chief foreign affairs correspondent.
According to USA Today, the event will be broadcasted on the CBS network and live-streamed on all platforms where CBS News 24/7 and Paramount+ are available.
There are rules that the candidates agreed upon prior to the debate. There will be no audience. The candidates won’t be allowed to bring any notes, and their microphones will not be muted.

Jimmy Carter, former president and noble peace prize winner, turns 100 years old on Oct. 1. Carter becomes the first American president to reach triple digits with George H. W. Bush, the second oldest president, living until 94.
According to CNN, Carter has the most righteous and most productive post-presidency in history. He built houses, took on peace missions, negotiated the release of hostages, wrote books and won Grammys.
Israel launches ground invasion against Hezbollah and Iran launched missiles at Israel
Israel launched ground raids and invasions in southern Lebanon early Oct. 1. According to BBC, the Israel Defense Force is aiming at the Iranian-based infrastructure that poses an immediate threat to Israeli communities in northern Israel.
A senior security officer of Israel told BBC that the forces had only gone within a close walking distance of Lebanon, however Hezbollah is denying this.
According to Aljazeera, more attacks are expected as the conflict escalates following the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli air strike. Iran is set to launch between 240-250 missiles at Israel and the U.S. bases in the area.
Dockworkers go on strike, threatening supply chains
The first International Longshoremen’s Association coastwide strike in nearly 50 years happened early Tuesday morning Oct. 1. Tens of thousands of dockworkers walked off the job from New England to Texas for higher wages and protections against automation, ILA President Harold Daggett said.
According to ABC, an expert said that a prolonged port strike could moderately increase prices for a range of goods. JPMorgan senior equity analyst Brian Ossenbeck told ABC that a shutdown of the ports would cost the economy up to $4.5 billion each day.
However, the White House told ABC News in a statement that it has been in contact with both the union and management in recent days and will hopefully resolve the issue soon.
A new tropical storm could hit Florida as soon as next week
A storm system is potentially developing in the Gulf of Mexico and could move into Florida. Even as people continue to recover from Hurricane Helene, they are also preparing for potential future damage.
According to ABC, the computer models predict a 40% chance of storm developments by the end of the week with heavy rain hitting the Florida coast. The name of the system will depend on whether a storm forms in the Atlantic first, with the potential names being Leslie or Milton.
