The Houston Cougars never trailed in the game, defeating the Horned Frogs 30-19.
The Cougars’ 27th-ranked defense consistently got the better of TCU, holding the Frogs to 299 yards of offense.
Josh Hoover threw a pair of costly interceptions, along with a fumble, to close the game. Houston also held top receiver Jack Bech to four catches for 55 yards.
Hoover ended the game with 233 yards and two touchdowns along with those picks – a far cry from the Josh Hoover we have seen this season.
When talking about the issue and the increase in turnovers, Hoover took responsibility.
“Things have been going wrong that needs to change, and that starts with me.”
TCU’s defense had no answers for Houston quarterback Zeon Chriss, who threw for 141 yards while running for 97 rushing yards, scoring one touchdown through the air and another on the ground.
The Frogs suffered a big loss early in the game when starting safety Abe Camara was ejected for targeting on a 3-and-1. That penalty gave the Cougars a first down, ultimately leading to a touchdown on that drive.
Before the clash with the Horned Frogs, the Cougars’ offense had scored zero points in their last two games.
Despite the setbacks, TCU found a bright spot in running back Cam Cook, who rushed for 72 years, averaging six yards per carry. Cook has been off to a slow start this season, with just 259 rushing yards over five games.
The biggest difference in the game was the turnover battle, as TCU committed four while Houston committed zero.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes said that turnovers were the main reason the team lost.
“We would get some momentum, then we would make mistakes and turn the ball over.”
TCU has a bye next week before traveling to face No. 18 Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Oct. 19.
