A former professor at Brite Divinity School was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography following a multi-agency investigation, according to Fort Worth police.
Charles Bellinger, 62, a former associate professor of theology and ethics, was taken into custody on Oct. 2 after law enforcement served search warrants at both his Arlington residence and his office on TCU’s campus. He was booked into Tarrant County Jail on Oct. 3, according to Tarrant County Criminal Justice Reports.
The operation involved the Fort Worth Police Internet Crimes Against Children Unit (ICAC), TCU Police and the United States Secret Service, along with other local and federal agencies, according to a statement from Fort Worth Police Department.
Brite Divinity School, which is located on TCU’s campus but operates as an independent institution, terminated Bellinger’s employment following the allegations.
In a statement, Dr. Stephen Cady, Brite Divinity School’s president, called the alleged behavior “repugnant and the antithesis of our values and mission.”
“When Brite administration was made aware of this situation, we immediately initiated our own investigation, cooperated with law enforcement, shut down his access to school technology, personnel, and facilities, and placed him on immediate administrative leave before terminating his employment shortly thereafter,” Cady wrote. “He did not teach a single class after we learned of the concern.”
TCU spokesperson Holly Ellman clarified that while Bellinger’s office was on TCU’s campus, he was not a university employee.
“Mr. Bellinger was an employee of Brite Divinity School, which is located on our campus but is not a unit of TCU. He does not presently have any employment relationship with TCU,” Ellman stated.
According to archived information from the divinity school’s website, Bellinger held multiple degrees, including a master’s from TCU obtained in 2013. His biographical information, which has since been removed from the school’s website, indicated his academic focus included theology, ethics and reflections on human psychology from a theological perspective.
Bellinger was released from the Tarrant County jail after posting a $30,000 bond. The investigation is ongoing, according to Fort Worth police.
