October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor those affected by this widespread disease.
According to Cancer.org, over 360,000 people will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in the U.S. this year alone.
For TCU senior Morgan Czepial, the cause is deeply personal. She watched her mother battle breast cancer in 2016, a journey that taught her the importance of community and emotional support.
“Watching my mom battle the illness was one of the hardest things I have ever seen,” Czepiel said. “But through that journey, my family and I realized how lucky we are to have each other and that family comes above all else.”
Many groups are rallying to make a difference including the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Each fall, they organize the White Violet Gala, a philanthropy event that uses a silent auction to raise funds for breast cancer education and awareness. The event also supports the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center.
Local businesses like Gorjana, a jewelry store located in University Park Village, are also showing support. Every October, Gorjana donates 50% of the purchase price of each style in its Pretty In Pink Collection. The proceeds directly benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Since partnering with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in 2021, Gorjana has raised over $200,000.
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, students and local businesses believe it is important to honor the resilience of survivors, emphasize the value of early detection and acknowledge the power of unified support.
