The first game isn’t until spring 2025, but the TCU men’s lacrosse team prepares with weekly practices and scrimmages.
The team practices Mondays and Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. They held an intrasquad scrimmage on Sunday, Oct. 20, at Justin Field. On Sunday, Nov. 3, they’ll host Oklahoma and Baylor in a friendly round-robin event at Justin Field.
The team competes in Division I of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association, the governing body for collegiate men’s club lacrosse. TCU plays in the Lone Star Alliance conference, which includes teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.
The team’s journey
While the team has recently seen major success, this wasn’t always the case. Senior midfielder Colin Mennitt has been with the team since he was a first-year student in 2021.
“I would definitely say the team took a huge jump our freshman year,” Mennitt said. “Just from a talent standpoint and the amount of people signing up.”
He said the seniors on the team then claimed it was “by far the best team we’ve ever had.” In the spring of 2022, the team made the national tournament. Mennitt said this got people’s attention.
“More people started hearing about us, and the school started giving us more money,” Mennitt said.
This upcoming season the team is set to get new gear including helmets.
The team usually carries about 35 members and three coaches. Brody Cummins is the head coach and a former TCU lacrosse player who started out as a defensive coordinator post-grad.
Outside of lacrosse
Off the pitch, TCU lacrosse is involved with the philanthropy “Once Upon A Room,” a national organization that seeks to enrich the lives of hospitalized children, teens and infants who fight serious illnesses and long-term acute trauma.
The team raises money for the organization and players visit Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth monthly. The team also raises funds for Jameson White, a young boy who is being treated for cystic fibrosis. Donations to Once Upon A Room to help Jameson can be made via the team’s Instagram page @TCUmenslacrosse.
The team’s dynamic
Mennitt said that the team is made up of hardworking, dedicated players who have close relationships.
“All the guys that have been here for all four years and stuck it out are real close,” he said. “I would say every year we get some stand-out freshman who is very good and that’s one thing that’s always been consistent.”
Mennitt also emphasized the level of hard work that the team displays every time they are out on the field.
“We all take it very seriously,” he said. “We show up and it’s honestly the highlight of all of our days just to get out there and play lacrosse with each other, and everybody embraces that. We all go 100% at practice, cherish every second and also prepare well for our games.”
In the spring, the team will practice Mon, Tue and Wed from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
TCU men’s lacrosse will open its 2025 season at home against Texas A&M on Feb. 2. Game time is TBD.
