Donald Trump wins U.S. Presidency, gives speech on unity
“It’s time to put the divisions of the past four years behind us, it’s time to unite,” said President-elect Donald Trump. “Success will bring us together.”
Trump gave a speech to the country early Wednesday morning, after gaining strong leads in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, which would later be called by the Associated Press.
Those wins assisted in the 292 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency as of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, with Nevada and Arizona leaning for Trump.
Stocks and other financial assets surges after Trump elected to office
The Dow Jones opened with a 1,200 point jump Wednesday morning, in large part due to the economic plan of President-elect Donald Trump, according to the Associated Press.
Trump has stated that part of his economic plan is lowering taxes for Americans, creating large tariffs on foreign imports to incentivize American producers and to end taxes on tips.
Elon Musk, who announced his endorsement of Trump in July, saw Tesla stock boosted by 14% Wednesday as of noon.
Trump to be the first Republican president in 20 years to win popular vote
Donald Trump is slated to be the first Republican president in 20 years to win the popular vote, according to CBS.
As of Wednesday at 6 p.m., the president-elect was up 295-226 electoral votes, with over 72 million votes compared to V.P. Kamala Haris’s 67 million votes.
George W. Bush was the last president to win the popular vote in 2004 in his re-election against John Kerry.
Bush put out a statement congratulating Trump on his win, and thanking the current administration, said the Associated Press.
“The strong turnout in this election is a sign of the health of our republic and the strength of our democratic institutions,” said Bush.
