A request to pause filings of the Jan. 6 case has been granted
Special counsel, Jack Smith, requested to pause all filing deadlines in both the election interference case and the other federal case he pursued against President-elect Donald Trump.
According to The New York Times, the prosecutors asked for a new deadline of Dec. 2 for the government to file “a status report or otherwise inform the court of the result of its deliberations.”
A Justice Department policy prevents the prosecution of sitting presidents. This request allows Trump’s lawyers about another month to file a significant pretrial legal document.
Judge Tanya S. Chutkan of the Federal District Court in Washington has granted Smith’s request. According to The New York Times, this request is “the first overt sign that Mr. Smith and his team are in the throes of figuring out how to shut down the two prosecutions.”
Trump’s new White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles
President-elect Donald Trump has named Susie Wiles as his new chief of staff.
Wiles was Trump’s 2016 Florida campaign advisor and his 2024 senior advisor. According to Politico, Trump said Wiles is “tough, smart, innovative and is universally admired and respected.”
Wiles’ main role in politics has been running campaigns. She helped Ron DeSantis win in the Florida gubernatorial election in 2018, and she was the chief of staff to the mayor of Jacksonville in her early career.
Wiles has worked with Republicans all across the ideological spectrum, from George H. W. Bush and Mitt Romney to former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
Chris LaCivita, who served as co-campaign manager with Wiles, described Wiles as “the perfect pick,” in an interview with Politico Thursday. “Just has a master ability to manage multiple things of significance simultaneously, which makes her, from a management standpoint, the perfect pick,” LaCivita said.
