Spring practice began for TCU football last week on March 26. The 15 total practices will conclude on April 15. Although the Frogs secured a winning record last season, many improvements must be made after many mistakes cost them games.
Here are four takeaways from Monday’s spring practice.
Jordan Dwyer looks as good as advertised
When Dwyer transferred in from Idaho, there were some concerns that he would have trouble going up against division one competition. However, he looked explosive, catching every pass that was thrown to him in the individual drills.
Josh Hoover looked to him early and often. During the scrimmage portion of practice, Hoover was able to connect with Dwyer for a 30-yard touchdown. It seems that Dwyer will help fill the hole at receiver.
Jeremy Payne looks to be the top Running Back
Payne took most of the work with the first team offense. He looked strong behind the offensive line. He hit the holes well and followed his blocks. This led to him being able to get to the second level of the defense more often than not.
He also showed off a different gear than we saw last year as he was pulling away from the defensive backs when he would make it to the secondary.
The Secondary looks more Comfortable
The secondary had a good showing as they didn’t allow any other deep passes besides the one to Dwyer. Canning Canada discussed that they understand the plays and formations better and they know their assignments better as well as their teammates’ assignments.
A point that he touched on was being more consistent. “Last year I would have one good week, then I would have one shaky week. I just need to stack reps and get better.”
Canada said that the defensive back room is deep and they are dealing with injuries, which is unfortunate. He did say that it gave the younger guys an opportunity to learn and get some reps.
The secondary seems like it has grown compared to last year and they seem to be more comfortable in Defensive Coordinator Andy Avalos’ system.
The sky’s the limit for QB Josh Hoover
Hoover didn’t have the flashiest practice today, but he took what the defense was giving him and didn’t force anything. He connected on a deep touchdown to Dwyer, but most of his passes were short to intermediate. This is good to see as turnovers were something that he struggled with last year.
Wide receiver Jordyn Bailey spoke highly of Hoover. “His confidence is through the roof. He’s been throwing balls this spring that are just unbelievable.”
TCU could be in for a big year, but a lot of that depends on how well Hoover is able to play.
