Students who are struggling in courses that have a high failure, drop or withdrawal rate may be able to get free help from the Peer2Peer tutoring program.
The program started on Zoom and was founded during the spring 2021 semester during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Luckily, we eventually figured out space, and we are now in the garden level of Samuelson Hall,” Brianne Varela, director of student success, said.
By the fall of 2023, it reported that it had approximately 1,600 appointments.
As the demand for tutoring continues to grow, the program is working hard to meet the needs of all students.
Anticipating a large drop in tutors after graduation, the program is now hiring. There is no GPA requirement to apply, but applicants must be at least sophomore standing or above.
“All of our tutors must have taken the class at TCU, made a B+ or above, received a faculty recommendation and then gone through an interview process to be hired,” Varela said.
Students can make tutoring appointments online through WC Online using their TCU credentials.
“Students are learning content from tutors who already know exactly what a specific professor expects in the course,” Varela said.
This paid, on-campus position offers flexible hours, making it a great opportunity for students seeking work. The program provides tutors with a 10-hour training session.
“Our program is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association, so we have a pretty involved training curriculum that we follow,” Varela said.
You can find applications to become a peer tutor on What2Do@TCU.
“If students are interested in being peer tutors and meet the requirements, we would love to have them apply and interview,” Varela said.
