TCU beat No.22 Kansas 7-2 to complete the weekend sweep.
Left-hander Mason Brassfield stepped up big for the Horned Frogs as he fired five scoreless innings in relief allowing three hits, one walk while collecting six strikeouts. His biggest strength?
“Being able to go out there and pound the zone,” he said. “To put a zero regardless of situation whether we are down by three or up by seven.”
Kansas struck early in the first inning with a lead-off home run to left field from center fielder Derek Cerda. It was his eighth of the year.
TCU starting pitcher Caedmon Parker would settle down after that and struck out the side. Parker would go four innings allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Kansas starting pitcher Cooper Moore cruised through the first two innings, not allowing a hitter to reach base while striking out three.
TCU would put up a crooked number in the third inning. A pair of singles from shortstop Anthony Silva and catcher Nolan Traeger set the stage for third baseman Jack Bell.
Bell slashed a double down the first base line. Silva and Traeger both scored, making it 2-1. Bell took third on the throw home.
He would score later when designated hitter Sawyer Strosnider hit a sacrifice fly to the center field.
Cole Cramer reached on a fielding error by Moore and got to second base. This came back to hurt Kansas when left fielder Noah Franco lined a double into right-center field, giving TCU a 4-1 advantage.
Kansas would battle back in the top of the fourth. Left fielder Brady Counsell would single to center field to score first baseman Jackson Hauge. This cut TCU’s lead to 4-2.
The Horned Frogs would increase their lead to five in the eighth inning. It started with a single from second baseman Cole Cramer that scored Strosnider. Center fielder Chase Brunson would add on as he launched a two-run home run.
Head coach Kirk Saarloos talked about how his team performed over the weekend.
“We limited the big inning,” he said. “We did a good job of getting hits when it mattered and our pitchers executed their pitches in some big situations.”
TCU’s next game will be against Dallas Baptist University on April 15 at 6 p.m at home.
