For TCU students living off campus, it is important to know what to do to prevent crime and stay safe.
A little more than half (53%) of TCU undergraduates live off campus. For many, it can be their first experience with independent living, which does come with some risk.
“For those living off campus, it is important to be aware of your surroundings, call 911 and use FrogShield to notify police as soon as you see something suspicious or if you feel at risk,” Robert Rangel, TCU police chief, said.
Stolen packages and car break-ins are among the most common issues that students have to deal with.

TCU police only have jurisdiction within one mile outside of campus, but they will respond to emergencies until Fort Worth police are involved.
While students can’t eliminate every risk, it is important to take proactive steps to prevent crimes and stay safe:
- Use FrogShield: The free safety app allows TCU students to quickly and anonymously report suspicious activity.
- Protect Deliveries: Consider delivering to your TCU P.O. box, using package lockers and prompt pickup to reduce porch thefts.
- Lock Up: Always lock cars and homes, install a security system and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight.
- Stay Protected: Carry pepper spray or other defensive tools when walking alone.
- Know the Numbers: The TCU Police Department’s emergency number is 817-257-7777 and their non-emergency number is 817-257-8400.
The TCU Police Department (TCUPD) works closely with the Fort Worth Police Department’s (FWPD) neighborhood patrol officer for the TCU area, Andrew Johns. Johns can be contacted at 817-372-2418.
