TCU’s Strike Down Cancer club brought Halloween spirit to campus this week with a new fundraiser– “Boo Bags.” With a $5 donation, students could send their friends a candy-filled goodie bag, complete with a note and delivery, all while supporting a meaningful cause. The club relied on word-of-mouth and social media promotion to quickly generate buzz for the new seasonal event.
The proceeds from the fundraiser primarily went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization dedicated to ending childhood cancer and ensuring that no family ever receives a bill for treatment.
“We wanted to support a place that not only conducts groundbreaking research but also takes care of families in their hardest moments,” Tyler Straley, the club’s executive director, said. “No one should be denied care because of financial hardship.”
Strike Down Cancer had already sold over 40 bags in the first day of advertising and aimed to raise $500 for St. Jude. A portion of the funds went toward purchasing candy and supplies for the bags. They will deliver the bags before Halloween to TCU students on or off campus within a 15-minute range, making it easy for students to give back.
Straley said his favorite part of the project was the different nature of the event from their usual work. While the club is best known for its large-scale fundraisers like the annual Pickleball Tournament and Color Run, this fundraiser offered a lighter, more playful way to give. “Our other events take months of planning; this one was just about spreading joy,” Straley said.
Strike Down Cancer hoped the fundraiser would create a sense of community giving across campus. The club aimed to encourage more student participation with the affordable price, demonstrating how giving a little can help a lot.
