The toll of Hurricane Melissa, the strongest Atlantic Hurricane on record
Hurricane Melissa, one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record with top winds of 185 mph, made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday, according to AP News.
There was severe destruction in Black River, Jamaica with storm surges up to 13 feet, said superintendent Coleridge Minto.
Buildings surrounding Black River are destroyed including Black River Hospital, with police unable to respond due to storm damage, “we are immobile,” said Minto to ABC News.
After Jamaica, Hurricane Melissa weakened and moved toward Cuba and Hispaniola – Haiti and the Dominican Republic, according to CBS News. As of now there is one death in the Dominican Republic, 23 in Haiti, and at least 30 in Jamaica.
The storm moved past the Bahamas on Thursday, and is heading toward Bermuda.
Five new suspects arrested in Louvre heist as authorities admit security gaps

Authorities admitted security gaps, blaming staff cuts and lack of funding, as new information comes out about the Louvre jewel heist, according to NBC News.
Five new suspects were arrested in the ongoing jewel heist investigation that happened 11 days ago in broad daylight at the Louvre Museum.
Two suspects were caught last weekend, one tried to flee to Algeria from Charles de Gaulle Airport. One is believed to be part of the original four-man gang. The arrest took place Wednesday night in Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis region, local authorities reported to CNN.
Both suspects are under formal investigation for organized theft and conspiracy and partially confessed after 96 hours of questioning.
According to CNN, details on the two suspects are as follows: A 34-year-old Algerian man with prior traffic offenses whose DNA was found on a scooter, and a 39-year-old illegal taxi and delivery driver from Aubervilliers who was previously known for theft and his DNA was found on broken glass from a display case.
The Jewels remain missing and experts believe they may be dismantled for raw materials.
New York jewelry heist in Queens
On October 16, around 2:20 p.m. in Jamaica Hills neighborhood of Queens, NYC three men, two disguised as construction workers, stole a safe and jewelry worth more than $3 million.
The robbers broke into the back door of the home wearing black clothes, neon vest, white helmets, and safety goggles, reported police officials to NBC News.
The victim, who does not was to be identified, told Nexstar’s WPIX that they were previously targeted in December 2024 at his jewelry store, where $800,000 in merchandise was stolen in Jackson Heights.
At the time the NYPD called it a “citywide pattern” and said the sledgehammer suspects tried to break into another jewelry store in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, according to WKBN 27.
The thieves have yet to be caught and police put out an alert on X account “NYPD Crime Stoppers”.
Arlington strip club raid with alleged sex trafficking
Police raided the Chica Locas strip club in Arlington, Texas finding drugs on-site and $13,000 in cash was seized as well as allegedly profiting from illegal sex acts, according to FOX 4 News.
Four people were arrested, including two club managers, Aries Tapia and Oziel Ramos were immediately arrested for evidence onsite.
A tip in August led investigators were alerted to allegations that employees were were engaging in illegal sexual acts for payment. Following an undercover investigation and “Operation Safe Stage” a joint investigation between multiple law enforcement agencies, authorities obtained search warrants last week.
“We were able to connect multiple women with community resources to help them escape this industry,” said Chief Alexander Jones.
Monkeying around at Spirit Halloween
A pet monkey was spotted swinging from rafters inside a Spirit Halloween store in Plano, Texas, according to NBC 5.
“This was animal kingdom live,” said Arlene Pinkston, who was shopping with her daughters at the Spirit Halloween off U.S. 75.
Bystanders were confused if the monkey was a part of the decor or if it was really an animal.
“My daughter looked up and she said, ‘What in the world?’ and she’s like, ‘Is that a real monkey?’ and I looked up and said, ‘Well, it’s got a diaper on so I guess it is real,’” Pinkston said with a laugh.
The officers on scene did observe the monkey swinging from the rafters, they do not know how the monkey got loose, according to Fox 4.
No injuries were reported to the animal or any shoppers and eventually the pet monkey was lured in by the owner using a cookie.
