The women’s basketball team had lots to celebrate Thursday: the No. 17 ranked Frogs won their first game of the year, 82-43, marking head Coach Mark Campbell’s 95th career win, and the team’s 13th straight season-opening win.
“It’s just nice to get that first one done and just get out there and compete and sweat, so many new players we have,” Coach Campbell said. “I’m really proud of this group as I didn’t know what to expect.”
Guard Olivia Miles and forward Marta Suarez both transfers made their debut as Frogs.
“It feels great to just play with a great group of girls and just the right pieces around me and just amazing humans,” Miles said.
Miles had 16 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while Suarez had 19 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
The stat that stood out to Campbell was the team getting 24 assists on 32 field goals.
“For a group that’s really truly learning how to play together, I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Campbell said.
The team will return to Schollmaier Arena on Sunday, Nov. 9, to face the Sam Houston State Bearkats. The game starts at 7 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN.
