TCU women’s soccer is headed to the NCAA quarterfinals after beating the University of North Carolina 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout.
The game took place at Garvey Rosenthal Soccer Stadium, where the Horned Frogs and the Tar Heels matched up for the first time in 25 years.
Both teams’ defenses started strong, limiting scoring opportunities and keeping the score 0-0 at halftime. The second half had much of the same effect, remaining 0-0. In the 81st minute, UNC freshman Bella Devey broke the tie when she scored off an assist from freshman Riley Kennedy.
The Tar Heels kept the lead for the rest of the half until TCU freshman Kamdyn Fuller found the equalizer in the 89th minute. Sydney Bercerra took a corner for the Frogs with 10 second left and Fuller buried it in the left corner, keeping the Frogs in the game.
The Horned Frogs and Tar Heels headed into a double overtime, where the score remained 1-1.
Both teams then went to a PK shootout, with the Tar Heels stepping up to the line first. UNC missed two of their picks and TCU only missed one, allowing them to advance to the quarterfinals.
This was TCU’s 18th win of the season, making their record 18-2-2.
