After a day off Wednesday, the Horned Frog football team will return to the practice field to prepare for the season opener against Oklahoma in Norman on Sept. 3."We've progressed," said head football coach Gary Patterson. "I don't know if you're ever ready for an Oklahoma, but we've done a good job in preparing our kids.

"The biggest thing is that we will find out on the 3rd."

Patterson said the No. 5-ranked Sooners are a tough team to beat on their home field.

Property rights of homeowners disregarded by government

Many residents in Arlington recently learned that they probably won't be allowed to stay in their houses. Three found out their house and properties have been condemned, meaning the city will force them to move unless they take the city to court, The Dallas Morning News reported a few weeks ago.

This is occurring because of two little words: eminent domain.

Eminent domain gives a city or state the power to take private property owned by normal citizens for its use without the owner's consent.

Closed practices serve purpose

Last week, head football coach Gary Patterson closed his team's practices to the public for the remainder of the season. He closed practices to the public because a fan on an online message board posted information about injuries and other team specifics that the coaching staff would rather have kept out of the public eye.Though this may not be the most popular thing Patterson has ever done, let's step back for a minute to assess the issue.

Whether it is for a rock concert or to hold debates, there is a new gathering place for students on campus. The Megalith rock formation in front of the Bailey Building is designed to draw together students and faculty and serve as a circle of knowledge, said Nowell Donovan, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs .

"A university is after knowledge and so are people," Donovan said. "It's a great catalyst for creativity and is designed to be a circle of truth."

TCU golfers fall short at U.S. amateur

Four TCU golfers and one TCU alumnus failed to make the cut Tuesday at the 105th U.S. Amateur Championship at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Two freshmen, Jon McLean and Jesse Speirs, and two sophomores, Franklin Corpening and James Sacheck, made up the TCU-record four qualifiers. 2005 graduate J.J. Killeen also qualified for the tournament.

Head men's golf coach Bill Montigel said his golfers played well in a field that included the world's best amateurs.

Player leaves TCU in hopes of new start

A Battle TCU lost.The top recruit for 2003, quarterback James Battle, is now a Lumberjack. Battle will continue his collegiate football career at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches.

"TCU just wasn't the spot for me," Battle said.

He said he felt he could not be himself at TCU.

"Whenever I would bring my family and friends to visit," Battle said, "they could always notice that I was different from how they remembered me in the past."

Former Horned Frog track athlete sues university

TCU has until the end of the week to respond to a lawsuit recently filed by an award-winning athlete and former student, according to the Tarrant County District Clerk's Office.In the lawsuit, Jacob Hernandez alleges TCU violated its own policy by denying his request to transfer to the University of Texas Track and Field program.

Hernandez filed the lawsuit Aug. 2, and TCU, the defendant, has 20 days after the first Monday the lawsuit was filed to respond, according to the clerk's office.

In a time when the world of sports is so concerned with the words "I," "Me" and "You," TCU seems to have found an individual who still knows the meaning of "We."Daniel Morrison Jr., TCU's new athletics director, has expectations set far beyond the simple science of team records and goal differentials.

"Things are already working pretty well here. We just need to make a few tweaks," Morrison said. "We just want to help young athletes reach their abilities."

This season brings forth a new head coach and a new conference for the TCU women's soccer team that features a majority of underclassmen.Head coach Dan Abdalla came to TCU from Nevada - Last Vegas, where he served as head coach from 2000-2004. He collected a record of 54-38-8 at UNLV, his alma mater.

Abdalla said he is happy to be at TCU because it is a well-rounded institution.

"TCU is a very unique and special place and I am just excited as can be to be here," Abdalla said.

Broadway named C-USA Male Athlete of the Year

TCU pitcher Lance Broadway was recognized as the 2004-05 Conference USA Male Athlete of the Year for his performance on the mound during his junior season. Broadway led the nation in wins with 15, posted a 1.62 ERA, struck out 151 batters and walked 35 in 117 innings last spring. He finished 9-0 with a 1.66 ERA in 10 C-USA starts.

Broadway received recognition as a first or second-team All-American by numerous baseball organizations and publications.

Sandora Irvin named C-USA Female Athlete of the Year

Conference USA named women's basketball forward Sandora Irvin 2004-05 Female Athlete of the Year for her work during her senior season. Irvin led the Frogs to their second C-USA Tournament title in three years, was named to the conference's All-Decade team, made her second consecutive C-USA first team and won the league's Defensive Player of the Year award for the third straight season.

She finished the 2004-05 season averaging 19.9 points, 11.8 rebounds, 4.5 blocks, 2.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
