Yogurt is a snack, not lunch

Published Nov 5, 2010

Yo! Frozen Yogurt Lounge has crossed the unspoken advertisement barrier. The stand propped outside the storefront as well as the in-store screen reads, "Let's do lunch. Make Yo! Frozen Yogurt your new healthy, low-cost lunch alternative."

Not only is it incorrect to call skipping an actual lunch healthy, but it's also manipulative to advertise in this manner with the realization that an overwhelming amount of women students on campus suffer from body-weight issues.

Inclusivness goes past one month of awareness

Published Nov 5, 2010

Freshman Nick Standerfer loves movies, works out at the University Recreation Center regularly and enjoys making friends. Though Standerfer has Down syndrome, he said he is more similar to other students than some may think.

This October, the university promoted inclusiveness for those with the condition by celebrating Down Syndrome Awareness Month. In support, many students volunteered at KinderFrogs School, a school for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students with Down syndrome, KinderFrogs administrative assistant Vivian Unger said.

TCU should keep up on emergency protocol

Published Nov 5, 2010

Students had a unfortunate wake up call early yesterday this morning, or more accurately, they didn't.

They didn't because the power was out for three or more hours early Thursday in several building around campus. The power outage was enough to close down the library till 4:30 am and knock out the card reader systems for all of the affected.

TCU Alert didn't even send out an e-mail to inform the student population about what was happening on the main campus. Thankfully the outage didn't last long and there were no related injuries.

The Frogs face a tough challenge

Published Nov 5, 2010

After rolling over UNLV 48-6 last week, the Horned Frogs face their toughest challenge this season in unbeaten Utah. The Utes jumped to No. 5 in the BCS standings after defeating Air Force, 28-23. This sets up the first Top-10 matchup in Mountain West Conference history. The team that wins this game will have the opportunity to play in a BCS game and possibly the national championship. The loser will have to struggle to make up ground in the standings and will most likely not make it to a BCS game.

Power outages leave students in the dark

Published Nov 5, 2010

Students across campus were left in the dark early Thursday morning after a widespread power outage.

The outage occurred around 1:30 a.m. and power remained off until mid-morning for most locations.

Associate Director of Residence Life Dave Cooper said, according to information he had, it was believed that the power outage was potentially due to a failed electrical feed from Encore Energy Partners LP, the university's energy supplier. He said he was unsure why the electricity connection failed to feed into campus.

The Horned Frogs have talent, potential for a great season

Published Nov 4, 2010

When the TCU men's basketball team takes the court on Nov. 12 against Jackson State University in the first official game of the 2010-2011 season, most TCU students will probably be more focused on the Nov. 13 football game against San Diego State University.

However TCU students should be prepared for a more successful basketball season than in years past. From a talent and athleticism perspective, this looks to be the best team in the last few years, and certainly the best of the Jim Christian era.

Women’s basketball holds highest rank yet

Holding the No. 23 ranking in the Associated Press preseason poll, the Horned Frogs women's basketball team has never been ranked higher before the season started.

With three players who averaged 20 minutes or more returning, head coach Jeff Mittie said playing experience would be important.

"You can have seniors that maybe haven't been on the floor but ours have and they've all started in their career," the twelfth-year head coach said. "I think their experience of having been there and been through the process, hopefully helping some of these younger players."

Basketball team boosted by transfers

After finishing the 2009-2010 season with a 95-85 loss to BYU in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Championships, the TCU men's basketball team will have a new look entering its regular season opener.

The most notable roster difference is the number of transfers acquired during the offseason who are now part of the Horned Frogs squad.

Guards J.R. Cadot and Sammy Yeager and forward Andre Clark, all juniors, signed National Letters of Intent in April after finding success during their junior college years at their previous schools.

Program provides students an opportunity to show appreciation

Published Nov 3, 2010

Students don't have to wait until the end of the semester for Student Perception of Teaching evaluations to show appreciation for their professors thanks to the Thank a Teacher for Teaching Excellence program.

Romana Hughes, associate director for teaching excellence of the William H. Koehler Center for Teaching Excellence, which sponsors the program, said the program is a way to let instructors know that students thank them for providing quality education.
