Can the Frogs do the improbable? At least it’s a clear-cut task

Published Jun 23, 2010

For TCU to make it to the College World Series Final it won't come down to any brain-hurting tie-breakers or run-differential scenarios, they still technically control their own destiny in this tournament.

The CWS double-elimination format isn't as quirky as World Cup pool play where points are awarded to teams that don't win a game and advancing to the knock-out round comes down to goal differentials and the final score of other games in many instances. "A win's a win" simply isn't accurate in the World's Game.

It looked like TCU's magical College World Series run would end Wednesday evening, but Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium exploded at the crack of the bat in the eighth inning as Matt Curry hit a moon-shot grand slam over the center field wall to lead TCU to a 11-7 comeback win over Florida State.

The Horned Frogs, on life support and down 7-3 in the eighth inning, exploded for eight runs off Curry's 18th home run of the season and Jantzen Witte's fourth homer of the season.

Fund-raising campaign surpasses $250 goal early

University of Texas legendary baseball coach and five-time College World Series champion Augie Garrido considers baseball war; each inning played is a battle to be won. Catcher Bryan Holaday is TCU's general on the field and in the dugout.

TCU head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle would agree-consider Schlossnagle a five-star general and Holaday as the next-highest ranking commander.

Message to TCU: Say thanks to UT for any CWS success

Published Jun 19, 2010

There wasn't much shared love at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin, TX last weekend when TCU stunned the Longhorns 4-1 in the best-of-three elimination game. Nothing symbolized the angst felt by Horned Frog Nation more than when the TCU bench charged the burnt-orange Longhorn emblem in center field and dog-piled the iconic Steer after the final out.

But if the Frogs accomplish anything in their first CWS appearance, even a single victory (which could come as soon as 1 p.m. Saturday against Florida State), they must thank UT for that opportunity.
